What is Doctrine?
The word doctrine as found in both the Old and New Testaments means “teaching.” Biblical doctrine is the teaching of the word of God on any given subject. It is likened to rain, dew, droplets and showers. This is found in Deuteronomy 32:2 -- “My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:”
The metaphor is appropriate because water nourishes, refreshes and sustains life. A constant supply is essential to all life – plant, animal and human. Biblical doctrine likewise is essential in the life of a believer. It needs to be absorbed on a daily basis. A sign in a library reads: “You don’t have to read every day – only on the days that you eat.”
Intake of the Word of Godis even more important than physical food. What information is more important than the declarations of God Himself concerning eternal truths?
