Rumors are swirling on the internet claiming that the US will launch surprise, pre-emptive air strikes against Iran this coming Sunday morning, April 6. What is the basis for such rumors?

From what we've been able to track, the rumors falsely claim that Russian intelligence sources are warning Arab and Iranian leaders that a US attack will commence in the pre-dawn hours of April 6. However, these rumors cite reports that were dated for an April attack in 2007 not 2008.

The latest from the rumor mill concerns a blog comentary written by Jim Kirwan and posted on Rense.com on April 2, 2008. Kirwan repeats these rumors and cites Russian intelligence reports just as other rumor-mongers have done. These reports, as best we can determine, have no basis in fact. They do coincide with increased tensions between Israel and Syria, but that is about all.

The Scott Ritter warning (shown below) that the White House is preparing for a war with Iran gives no time date whatsoever.

Scott Ritter, former head of weapons inspection in Iraq who protested there were no weapons of mass destruction to justify an invasion, believes the same is true for Iran. But there is an 80 percent chance of war with Iran, he told about 200 people Wednesday at Middlebury College as part of a series of talks facilitated by the Vermont Peace and Justice Center.
