Russian Marines & Warships To Syria

Russian Air Defenses Will Be Delivered

Russia is raising the stakes in a geo-political poker game with the West over Syria. Russia has announced that warships carrying 600 Russian Marines are headed for Syria.

The Russian marines will be assigned to assist any of more than 20,000 Russian civilians wishing to evacuate that nation and return to Russia. The Marines are also tasked with protecting those who remain along with certain other Russian military assets in Syria.

Russia's Foreign Minister has announced that Russia will fully honor its sales contract with Syria for delivery of its high-tech S-300 air defense missile systems. These latest developments are an effort by Moscow to halt Western aid to Syrian rebels.

In the meantime, DEBKA.com reports that Syrian President Assad and the Iranians are doing everything they can to bring Russia deeper into the situation so that if/when military action breaks out, Russia will be inclined to send additional troops and assets into the fray.
