Despite frantic diplomatic efforts in Cairo, no deal has been reached despite numerous optimistic statements from Cairo diplomats. President Obama dispatched Secretary of State Clinton to the region to assist in negotiations.
There appears to be a genuine desire on the part of Israeli PM Netanyahu for some sort of agreement. His popularity ratings have soared into the stratosphere, but public opinion polls indicate Israeli voters are opposed to a ground invasion of Gaza.
Analysts believe that if a ceasefire agreement is not reached by Thursday, Israel will more likely launch some sort of ground attack into Gaza.
