Canada Closes Iranian Embassy
&
Expel Iranian Diplomats
Canada has closed its embassy in Tehran and will expel any Iranian diplomats left in Canada. The Canadian government has taken the action because the Iranian government is viewed as "the most significant threat to global and security in the world today." A government spokesman cited Iran's nuclear program and its assistance to the Syrian regime of Bashar Assad as two specific reasons in concluding Iran's threat to global peace. Syria Has Dispersed Chemical Weapons
to 20 Sites
Western intelligence agencies suspect that the Assad regime has several hundred tons of chemical weapons scattered among as many as 20 sites across Syria according to the Washington Post. The stockpile appears to be larger and more widely distributed than previously thought. In fact, no one is sure if there are other secret locations as yet unknown to the West.
This revelation has increased worries among Western allies should there be a breakdown in security guarding those stockpiles. Of course, there is also concern that Assad may yet order their use either against his own people or against Israel and Turkey.
Military analysts along with current and former US officials are worried about the ability to secure those stockpiles in the event intervention becomes necessary. Securing such stockpiles could be difficult in the middle of a civil war. Of course, the other concern is that intervention will trigger Assad's usage of these weapons against Turkey and Israel.
