Israeli Embassy in Egypt Attacked

Israeli Diplomats Evacuated Safely

 

(AO-Newswire) -- Egyptian radicals led thousands of Egyptian civilians into an attack on Israel's diplomatic embassy in Cairo over the weekend. The mob broke into the embassy and seized 6 security guards, holding them hostage for the weekend until finally Egyptian military commandoes managed to rescue the Israeli guards. Other embassy personnel, including the Israeli ambassador to Egypt had been evacuated to safety and whisked out of the country by Israeli Air Force transport craft.

The incident raised tensions and hostility to a new level across the Middle East. It is believed that elements of the radical "Muslim Brotherhood" organized the attack on Friday afternoon and evening (9/9). Not until Saturday did Egyptian authorities get a handle on the situation.

Elements of the Muslim Brotherhood are calling for a nullification of the Egypt-Israeli peace treaty of 1979. They cite an Israeli attack on Gaza Palestinians which accidentally killed some Egyptian border guards just days earlier. It remains to be seen as to how diplomatic relations will be affected between Israel and Egypt in the wake of these two incidents.
