Italy Halts NATO Action In Libya
Italy announced it would pull out of NATO operations against Libya and would no longer allow NATO to use Italian air bases to conduct bombing missions against Libyan targets.
The move by Italy effectively ends the NATO air campaign to oust Libya's dictator, Moammar Gaddafi. NATO members involved in the air campaign were reportedly running low on inventory of bombs and missiles. Without Italian air bases, NATO air efforts would be restricted to air operations from the French aircraft carrier, the Charles De Gaulle and British air bases located on Crete.
