Wikileaks Document Dump Reveals
U.S. Narrowly Averted Israeli-Syria War
Back in February of 2010
As we had reported in our A-O Intelligence Digest, back in February, the U.S. narrowly averted a Middle East war when Israel discovered that Syria had shipped Scud missiles into Lebanon and Hezbollah control.
On February 17, 2010 - the Under Secretary of State, William Burns met with Syrian President Assad in Damascus. The U.S. diplomat warned Assad that the transfer of Scud missiles to Hezbollah could spark a conflict with Israel. Assad denied any such transfer. The next day more U.S. diplomats met with Syrian military officials and re-stated the warning and Syrian officials again denied Israel's allegations. Even so, the Syrians agreed to halt the transfer of weapons - IF the U.S. improved relations with Syrian.
After the second Syrian meeting, U.S. officials met with Israeli leaders who warned the U.S. contingent that Syria did intend to move Scud D missiles into Hezbollah hands in Lebanon and asked the U.S. to again warn the Syrians and ask them to stop such a move.
Later in February, Assistant Secretary of State Jeffrey Feltman asked the U.S. Embassy in Damascus to tell the Syrians that the transfer of the missiles could "jeopardize regional prospects for peace and stability. Specifically, Syrian transfers of increasingly sophisticated weaponry risk renewed conflict between Israel and Hizballah that may expand, unlike in 2006, into Syria." A few hours later in meetings with the Syrians, Damascus again denied such movements.
By May, Israel's Prime Minister met with French President Sarkozy and Italy's Prime Minister Berlesconi and told them Israel had documented evidence that Scud missiles had been transfered to Hezbollah control in storage facilities in Syria. Israel reported that it knew that Hezbollah had amassed 50,000 rockets and missiles for use against Israel.
The U.S. diplomatic efforts had averted an outbreak of war in February. As we had reported at the time, U.S. Vice President Biden visited Israel with a specific demand that Israel halt last minute preparations for air strikes against Iran's nuclear facitilities and attacks against Hezbollah and Syria. We also noted similar incidents took place in Mid-March with the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Mullen visiting Israel at the last moment to demand Israel halt a strike attack against Iran.

Real Life "Jaws" Shark Attacks
Plague Egyptiran Resort Beaches
At Sharm El-Sheikh
In less than a week 5 shark attacks have plagued the Eygptian resort community at Sharm El-Sheikh with one victim killed. The incidents have crushed tourism at not only Sharm El-Sheikh but at resorts all along the Red Sea.
Two sharks were caught and autopsies revealed one shark was behind the attacks. The next day, beaches reopened only to have another shark attack took place killing a 71 year old German woman who was scuba diving along a reef close to shore.
The head of a Red Sea diving school remarked that the situation in the resort community is a replay of the 1975 Hollywood thriller, "Jaws" except that the Red Sea is not known for harboring Great White Sharks. Until these latest instances, only 6 shark attacks had been reported in the previous 10 years.
The situation has prompted the Egyptians to seek help from American and Australian shark experts. Teams are now on their way to the Red Sea to study the situation.
It appears that for some unknown reason, shark migrations in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean have changed recently prompting an influx of different shark specides to congregate in the Red Sea resort region.
