Ahmadinejad Visits Lebanon

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived to a tumultuous reception in Beirut, Lebanon amid world concerns that his trip might trigger an overthrow of the Lebanese government and prompt an immediate war with Israel. We stongly suggest reading one Lebanese newspaper's online coverage of the Iranian leader's arrival. Note that the article ends with quotes from Lebanese citizens who do not care for Iran's president.

But members of Lebanon's pro-Western parliamentary majority have denounced the trip as a bid to portray Lebanon as "an Iranian base on the Mediterranean."

Many Christians and Sunnis in the country are also wary of the visit.

"This is no longer our country," lamented Georges, 61, who would not give his last name. "This country is for Hizbullah and Iran now, and God knows what Hizbullah is cooking up for us after the visit.

"May God help us."

Added Mona, 43, a Christian woman who lives north of Beirut: "I am disgusted by this visit.

"They refer to him (Ahmadinejad) as a savior but all he has brought us is trouble."

As soon as Iranian President Ahmadinejad could speak to the Lebanese public, he called for a "unified" Lebanon meaning that Hezbollah should be ruling the govvernment of Lebanon. A lawmaker in Israel's Knesset has called for IDF snipers to kill Iran's President Ahmadinejad, should the Iranian leader get close enough to the Israeli border with Lebanon for an IDF sniper to have Ahmadinejad in the cross-hairs of his rifle scope. He is not alone. This seems to be a strong sentiment among many Israelis, but it would set an uncomfortable precedent that would leave Israeli leaders as 'marked targets' for Iranian retaliation.
