7.2 Quake Shakes Baja


Los Angeles & San Diego Rocked

A 7.2 Magnitude earthquake rocked southern California and northern Mexico on Easter Sunday afternoon with the epicenter located near Mexicali, Mexico  Initial reports indicate one death so far near Mexical, Mexico when a home collapsed on the victim. There are reports of more home collapses in the area giving concern that there may be more fatalities to be reported. Rescue teams from nearby Tiajuana, Mexico have been rushed to the scene.

Experts initially tagged the quake at 6.9 magnitude but after examining the data, scientists quickly upgrade the severity to a 7.2 magnitude quake.

The earthquake was felt all over Southern California, rocking high rise buildings from San Diego to Los Angeles, but there were no immediate reports of major damage. Nine alleged members of a Michigan Militia known as the Hutaree Militia have been arrested on charges they were planning to kill local law enforcement officials during an April operation. The militia group claims it was planning to do battle with the Antichrist as well as killing a police officer and then bombing the funeral in an effort to kill more police officers.

Over the prior weekend FBI agents conducted raids in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana in an effort to halt the alleged plot. Federal authorities are warning that right wing extremist militia forces are still a threat to the government of the United States 15 years after the Oklahoma City bombing. Federal officials allege that militia groups around the country remain a threat to the Federal Government although the Hutaree Militia group was considered perhaps the most radical and dangerous of the militia groups.

Charges against the alleged Hutaree Militia members who are in custody include "seditious conspiracy - plotting to levy war against the U.S." as well as possessing a firearm during a crime of violence, teaching the use of explosives, and attempting to use a weapons of mass destruction, as in homemade bombs.

Accodring to the group's website, the name Hutaree means "Christian warrior" and is alleged by media reports as being part of a secret language that only members are priveleged to know. The group's website quotes several Bible passages and declares: "We believe that one day, as prophecy says, there will be an Anti-Christ. ... Jesus wanted us to be ready to defend ourselves using the sword and stay alive using equipment."  The website does not state any particular grievances that would the federal government's allegations that would motivate the group to kill any police officer or bomb a funeral afterwards.

Critics of the Militia Movement claim that there has been a resurgence in the past year or so of "domestic militancy" similar to the atmosphere before the Oklahoma City bombing of a Federal Office building in that city. A former FBI counter-terrorism agent was quoted by Associated Press as stating that "It's issues like eminent domain and immigration, and apparently national health care in some quarters." It's increasing these people's ire and their discomfort with their own government."

It would appear that the Obama Administration is picking up where the Clinton Administration left off in attempting to demonize militia movements and linking them with fundamentalist and evangelical Christianity in America. From what we've picked up around various internet discussion forums, this latest situation came close to setting off a nationwide militia uprising against the Federal government that could have or even yet trigger a full scale civil war in America. The reason this latest incident did not trigger a general uprising by militia forces around the country was due to the fact the most militia units shunned the Hutaree militia. Russia's Prime Minister Putin traveled to Venezuela last week for talks with President Hugo Chavez aimed at deepening ties and friendship which could form the basis for an alliance of sorts against the United States foreign policy initiatives in Russia's backyard.

Belgium has become the first European country to ban Muslim women from wearing veils known as the "burkha." Other European nations such as France are preparing to take similar moves.
