The following list of news stories comprise what The A-O Report considers to be the top ten most significantly prophetic news stories of the past decade from January 1 of 2000 to December 31, 2009. We provide a brief reason afterwards for an explanation for each itme selected.
#1. Babylon-America Conquers Iraq
On March 20, 2003, then President George W. Bush ordered the launching of Operation Iraqi Freedom, which began a military campaign that culminated with the invasion and conquest of the nation of Iraq in what was once the area of what was known as the ancient Babylonian empire. From the standpoint of Biblical Prophecy, America conquered ancient Babylon and thus became the “New Babylon” by virtue of the conquest. Although a puppet government is now in place for that conquered land, America is still the conqueror that controls and manipulates the nation itself. For all practical purposes of prophetic fulfillment, America became the future Babylon of Biblical Prophecy in the spring of 2003 and remains so to this day.
#2. Rise of Radical Islam & Terror War
One could easily argue that the rise of radical, Islamic fundamentalism began in 1979 with the establishment of the Iranian Islamic Republic. Radical Islam stair-stepped after radical Muslims took over Iran, as radicals formed into fighting unit within Afghanistan, during the Soviet Union’s occupation of Afghanistan during the 1980s. In the decade of the 1990s Al Qaeda developed a base of operations in Afghanistan
As our last decade unfolded, Al Qaeda boldly lashed out America with a spectacular terror strike on New York City and Washington, D.C. on September 11, 2001. This action set the stage for what became known as “The War on Terror” when American troops first invaded Afghanistan just weeks after the 911 terror attacks. The terror war took a new tack after the American invasion of Iraq as Al Qaeda sent fighters to battle American troops attempting to subdue the last of the Baath Party and Saddam Hussein loyalists.
During the decade, Al Qaeda aggressively recruited a burgeoning number of volunteers for the radical cause of Islam and established new footholds in a few, central African nations as well as in Arab Sheikhdoms in the Persian Gulf.
In Pakistan, the latter part of the decade saw the Pakistani governmental structure deteriorate dramatically as radical Taliban elements began to wage a civil war against the central governments. In the last two years of the decade, Pakistan struggled to avoid becoming a failed nation-state, although some argue that by the end of 2009 Pakistan had already become a failed nation. More over, Pakistan’s nuclear weapons arsenal remains at risk to seizure by radical Muslims.
Al Qaeda and the Taliban were not the only radical Muslims embracing terrorism in the decade. The Muslim Brotherhood continued in its fight to overthrow the Egyptian government, but perhaps the most ominous development in Islamic terror emanated from Iran.
Iranian leaders were developing their own brand of “Shiite” sect terror. Iran embraced and supported Hezbollah Palestinians in Lebanon and in 2006 began to support Hamas in the Gaza Strip. With generous Iranian support and guidance, Hezbollah fought a summer war in 2006 with Israeli Defense Forces and battled Israel to a military stalemate mostly because of political limitations inflicted on Israeli forces by Israeli politicians and the New World Order minions such as the Bush Administration. After that war, Iran has resupplied Hezbollah and increased Hezbollah’s military capabilities with additional missiles and chemical, biological weapons.
As 2009 began, Iran’s other proxy army, Hamas battled Israeli forces to yet another stalemate by the end of January. Additional Iranian support went to rebels in Yemen who were on the verge of overthrowing the Yemeni government, giving Iran a new ally as it seeks to build a new Persian Empire.
Iran reportedly also has maintained a large system of terrorist “sleeper” cells in the United States, so that if necessary, Iran could inflict major internal strife within the continental United States.
At the end of the decade, Islamic radicals are on the rise and on the march around the world, poised for new victories in the new decade with the radical elements gunning to eradicate Israel.
#3. The Iranian Nuclear Weapons Crisis
The Iranian nuclear weapons crisis pops in at number 3 in our countdown for the top 10 most prophetic news developments of the first decade of the 21st Century.
Our readers should have no trouble remembering this story because it has been a running concern for at least half of the decade, beginning in 2004. Details on the exact status of Iran’s nuclear weapons program remains a mystery. For the past three years, some experts have warned that Iran was on the verge of building a nuclear bomb but with each passing year, no evidence has emerged to validate such predictions.
Concern about Iran’s abilities reached a fever pitch in 2007 until December when the US Intelligence Agency published a new intelligence finding which claimed that Iran had suspended its nuclear weapons program during America’s invasion of Iraq and that Iran had never resumed that program. The report was met by a wave of criticism and doubt from not only Israel but from France, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Egyptian intelligence services who concluded that Iran had never stopped its nuclear weapons program.
In the past year however, Israeli, French and German intelligence agencies have warned that Iran was indeed on the verge of being able to build its first bomb.
Reports surfaced last year that Iran had enough enriched uranium to make at least a dirty, or radioactive bomb or bombs but it would seem that Iran’s leaders have chosen to wait and continue enriching a large supply of enriched uranium to make several bombs at once.
This past fall, Iran announced aggressive new plans for extensive development of additional enrichment programs and nuclear power plants on a 10 year basis. Iran also announced it would begin adding a new advanced centrifuge system that would be able to run high-speed, weapons-grade enrichment level uranium in mass production. Once those systems are fully installed and running, Iran could have the capacity to build at least 3 or 4 bombs per year.
Also during the year, Iran tested a new solid-fuel ballistic missile called the Saji 2 missile with an intermediate range cable of reaching much of southern Europe as well as Israel. The new missile would be able to launch on short notice and have far greater accuracy that its liquid fueled missiles which take 2 days to prepare for launch. The new Sajil 2 missiles are capable of carrying nuclear warheads. By late in 2009, new intelligence reports from France indicated that Iran has the technology and designs to make a nuclear warhead that could fit on the Sajil-2 missile. Iran also now had the technology and equipment to make a special trigger for such a warhead.
Additionally, new intelligence reports in the past two years indicated that Iran was also working on a ‘plutonium’ bomb that could be far more devastating than any atomic bomb.
The Iranian nuclear program has dovetailed with Iran’s foreign policy goals of establishing a new Persian empire across the Middle East, which matches closely with the Magog Prophecies of Ezekiel.
At number 3 on our list, Iran’s nuclear weapons program is only topped by America becoming Babylon of prophecy after conquering Iraq and by the overall rise of radical Islam which is the vehicle by which Iran’s prophetic role can be accomplished.
#4. Global Climate & Move for Global Government
It has been slow in development, but with each passing year, liberal media and university scientists have been warning the public that Planet Earth was warming up because of human activity and pollution. The hue and cry about “global warming” reached high gear in the latter part of our first decade of the century. Former American Vice President Al Gore produced an academy-award winning documentary film warning of the coming disaster for the planet unless the entire world of nations began immediately cooperating to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
During the decade, the general population had some doubts as a few scientists were able to come forward questioning the claims made by the Al Gore crowd of environmentalists.
For some of us, we understood the real agenda for Global Warming was merely a ploy to enable new world government bureaucrats to snag control of nations and ensnare the world in a global government initially dedicated to saving the environment.
In 1997 the Kyoto Protocols were proposed in Japan to stem Global Warming but the protocols were slow to be ratified. Eventually by February of 2005, the Kyoto accord was put into force but it took until last summer to get 187 nations to agree to the protocols.
The world waited until December of 2009 for the next Global Warming Summit in Copenhagen to set the final agenda that would establish the framework for an enforcement agency that would in essence become the apparatus for a global government. Such a vision fell apart once the summit actually began, as various factions fought over who would control the apparatus by which all nations would be governed.
By the end of the summit, on December 18, 2009 Red China, and India stood firm against the idea of implementing a global governing body to be the world’s policemen enforcing the Global Warming Treaty. Instead, the world settled for everyone promising to do their part without an actual government bureaucracy in place to clobber errant nations. However at year’s end, British PM Brown was attempting to rally a new effort to create such a bureaucratic police force even as Britain edges toward bankruptcy. It’s only a matter of time though until such a police force comes into existence and when it does, the rest of Global Government will follow with an Antichrist right behind it.
#5. Global Economy In Crisis
The entire first decade of the 21st century lived with a ticking time bomb in the world’s economy. Fractional reserve banking of the past 55 years was about to pop by 2000. The entire concept of fractional reserve banking had created tremendous investment bubbles in the stock and bond markets as well as in the real estate industry. The whole thing was being held together by extremely flimsy derivatives markets.
The economy had nearly popped in 2001 after the terror attacks of 9/11, yet the NWO couldn’t get their act together to take advantage and follow through with an economic collapse, as not everything needed was in place yet. Certain nations like Red China and India were balking at following the NWO banking agenda.
Not until 2007 did the real estate market pop and the air came rushing out of that bubble.
The financial investment brokers were the first to feel the effects in early 2008 but the chickens didn’t come home to roost until the fall when the stock market lost nearly half its value and the dollar swooned to record lows against nearly every currency.
2099 saw a further decline in the value of the dollar and the international community of nations began to move towards constructing an alternative monetary system that would dump the dollar as the world’s reserve currency. A short term solution of a regional basket of currencies is now planned for implementation in 2010 and 2011 although the global government bankers are working hard behind the scenes to finish the development of digital RFID computer chip implants and the infrastructure to put into place an electronic currency system somewhere around 2012 to 2014. Such a system would be able to fulfill the prophecies of Revelation chapter 13 concerning the “Mark of the Beast” and 6-6-6.
#6. Israel’s Palestinian Wars of 2006 & 2009
In the summer of 2006, Israel became embroiled in a short but bitter war with Hezbollah on Israel’s northern border with Lebanon. For the first time ever, Israel’s vaunted military was unable to score a decisive victory on the battlefield and although technically the war ended in a tactical draw, Hezbollah scored a psychological victory by claiming to the rest of the world that it had stood up to Israel, something no Arab army had ever been able to boast since Israel’s founding.
After the war, Hezbollah’s ‘sugar daddy’ sponsor, Iran, launched an ambitious effort to re-equip and re-supply Hezbollah with more rockets and missiles than ever before. Hezbollah also received additional small arms and new, very sophisticated anti-tank weapons along with some anti-aircraft weapons capabilities. By the end of the decade Hezbollah posed a greater danger to Israel’s security than in 2006.
Something similar developed on Israel’s southern flank. Iran once again had aided Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip with a large investment of small arms, and rockets. Just after Christmas, 2008, Hamas terrorists stepped over the line once too often and Israel responded with a military offensive that launched infantry and tanks into the Gaza Strip supported by an extensive aerial campaign. Battles raged for nearly a month before a UN ceasefire took hold.
In the aftermath, the Palestinians and Hamas accused Israel of committing war crimes against humanity. Their claims were supported by Israeli military unknowingly blasting UN officials plus targeting a UN security compound for civilians with illegal artillery shells.
If one didn’t know any better, one would think the Israelis deliberately intended to provoke the UN to bring criminal charges against the Israeli government and its leaders.
Before the end of the year, the UN was on the verge of following through with criminal proceedings against Israeli leaders involved in the war. The U.S. managed to shield Israel by delaying final actions until 2010 but Israel’s war on Hamas brought on an international backlash that has made Israel a pariah within much of the international community.
This fits with Biblical Prophecy’s portrayal of Israel in the last days being considered something akin to being an outcast among the nations.
#7. The Rise of Pandemic Medical Threats
The first decade of the 21st Century also witnessed potential epidemics involving bizarre diseases such as a ‘flesh-eating” disease, Morgellon’s disease, then the West Nile Virus by mid-decade. The next threat to pop up was “Bird Flu” known as H5N1 or “Avian Flu.” Warnings flew around the medical industry of a worldwide epidemic of Biblical proportions in 2007 and 2008 but nothing really ever came of such warnings, but not to worry, something far worse was on the horizon, “Swine Flu” known as H1N1. It popped up as a looming threat in the Spring of 2009 but contrary to dire predictions by medical experts and government officials around the world, this version of the flu proved to be no more serious than the regular flu. Yes, about 12,200 are thought to have died from this virus in 2009 according to the World Health Organization, but overall, flu deaths worldwide have not jumped noticeably from any ‘normal’ year.
So for all practical purposes, one could claim that our first decade of the 21st Century was “much ado about nothing” in regards to pandemic health threats.
Even so, these potential threats underscore Biblical prophecy plagues in the last days and that the world is vulnerable to plague like conditions that could kill millions, but only when the time is right. The decade just ended was not the right time for such prophetic fulfillments, which are reserved for the great Tribulation and the arrival of the Antichrist coming into power.
#8. The Rise of the Roman Empire: EU & MU
The Old Testament Prophet, Daniel revealed a vision of Humanities key world empires in a prophetic context. The vision revealed a strange ‘statue’ in the likeness of a man. The legs of which was interpreted to be a reference to the old Roman empire and the feet and 10 toes would be a reference to a revived Roman Empire.
If such an interpretation were true, then perhaps this portion of the prophecy has been fulfilled by the rise of the European Union. At least that’s what many prophecy commentators have suggested in their interpretation of Daniel’s vision and world events of today. However, not all of the EU composes the old Roman Empire revived.
The Old Roman Empire consisted of nations along the northern coast of Africa, such as Egypt, Libya, Algeria, and Morroco, not to forget Israel, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey. None of these nations are a part of the European Union. It would seem that the EU doesn’t fulfill the vision of Daniel, unless it’s simply one foot of the vision.
In the Summer of 2008, French President Sarkozy launched what he called “The Mediterranean Union” (aka – “MU”) which includes all of the nations that were part of the old Roman Empire but were not part of the EU.
2008 saw this MU organized and 2009 saw it begin to pull itself into some semblance of an organization. It is not yet fully formed, but in 2009 it did make progress and this constitutes in my mind the coming fulfillment of Daniel’s statue vision with not merely the EU but also The Mediterranean Union (or MU).
With that in mind, we place it at number 8 on the top prophetic developments of the decade.
#9. The Rise of the Kings of the East
The Biblical Prophecies never mention Red China by name but Revelation does refer to the Kings of the East and the insinuation that these kings have great power. Some commentators argue that the Kings of the East may not refer to human nations or human kings but rather supernatural entities. This is indeed a possible interpretation. However, it if is not a correct interpretation then the Kings of the East must refer to nations such as Red China, India and perhaps also, Japan.
While there are no monarchies left in Red China or India, the Emperor of Japan remains as a figurehead, but otherwise the term “kings” in prophecy is reduced to the understanding that it refers to ‘rulers’ – and the Greek term “basileai” is a term that can mean a literal king or simply a ruler and or also simply an “ambassador” or “representative” from a king or a nation.
Regardless of the term “king” the prophecies do refer to a direction, east. That means the direction is east from Jerusalem and Israel.
After World War 2, Asia was decimated by Japanese occupation. It took more than 50 years for most of Asia to re-develop into an economic powerhouse of nations. Leading that economic growth in the first decade of the 21st Century was Red China. Much of Red China’s wealth has come at the expense of the United States which has had an insatiable appetite for cheap consumer goods made in China by cheap labor of Chinese workers.
India also has benefited from trade with the U.S. as American companies outsourced labor to India. Growth in both nations has brought those nations to a position of economic power rivaling that of Japan. Indeed, Red China’s growth potential is enormous and could eventually dwarf not only Japan but the United States in the next 10 years.
With such a thriving track record so far in this century, Red China, India and Japan certainly are reaching an important capability to be views as “the Kings of the East” in Biblical Prophecy.
#10. The Rise of Barack Obama
For our final position in the top 10 news developments of the first decade of the 21st Century we have what I think is a tie.
The election of Barack Obama as the first, black President of the United States is in itself a compelling news development for the decade and for the history of the United States. Yet if we remove the wonder of his race, we note that perhaps far more importantly, Obama’s policies have proven to be extremely socialistic and totalitarian in nature. Indeed President Obama is marching to the drummers of the New World Order and has done all he can to promote that cause. He particularly attempted to salvage the Global Warming Summit in Copenhagen, but without success.
Earlier in the year, Obama did succeed at a G-8/G-20 Summit to assist in arranging for a new monetary system that will be the interim perhaps prior to the implementation of a new international, electronic currency system that will fufill the 6-6-6 prophecies.
Some prophecy watchers really think President Obama could be the Antichrist. While I would not disagree that Obama ‘could be’ the Antichrist, I temper that by noting other key individuals out there “could be” the future Antichrist. We simply do not yet have any clear indication who will be the Antichrist. Even so, the fawning over President Obama by the liberal elite in America and Europe raises eyebrows with wonder about Obama’s future potential as Satan’s primary agent. Only time will tell.
#10. Failed Y2K Predictions
Finally, tied for 10th is perhaps something that will trigger a debate between A-O Report readers. Some might claim that the failed predictive hoopla that surrounded Y2K was a non-event and was never involved in Biblical Prophecy to begin with.
I would agree with such an assessment. However, the reason I place the Failed Y2K Predictions as tied for 10th position is because of the after-effects the predictive hoopla has had on the world in general and specifically the Church, especially the Church in America.
Many churches and ministers jumped on the Y2K bandwagon. Some even profited handsomely from that hoopla. Some were mere charlatans masquerading as ministers.
Many Christians and church goers now look back on the non-event of Y2K and have concluded that they will never again be alarmed by such doomsday talk, including Biblcial Prophecy.
Such individuals can also believe that since Jesus didn’t return in 2,000 then maybe he’s not going to return, or not at least in our lifetimes. Consequently, Y2K has had the effect of turning people away from having an interest in studying/learning Biblical Prophecy. Such a lack of interest has been pronounced, particularly within the Christian publishing community. Biblical Prophecy has also become a subject in church pulpits that is persona non-grata. Church pastors, particularly many mega-church pastors (especially the “purpose driven” churches) have totally eliminated any talk or mention of Biblical Prophecy.
Oh, there are a few exceptions. John Hagee is one exception in particular that comes to mind. There are of course a few Bible teaching, preaching churches left that mention Biblical Prophecy but such instances are rare, in terms of relative percentages.
Instead, this past decade has witnessed the rise of mega-churches that are “purpose driven” and essentially are becoming apostate churches devoid of sound doctrine. Much of this is do in large measure to the non-event that was known as Y2K. So for that reason, I believe it deserves a tie for 10th place on our list and something to keep in mind to better understand why the “Church” of our day, as a whole, is not focused Biblical Prophecy or the Return of Jesus Christ.
That concludes our list of top 10 major developments of the first decade of the 21st Century. These of course, are just opinions with no way to really measure such things scientifically or mathematically. You may take issue with the list. You may think of other issues and developments that are more worthy of being in this list, or you may think some issues may not be so worthy of being on the list. Either way, remember, its just subjective opinion but it does provide an element of perspective in looking back on where we’ve been and where we’ve come prophetically, in the last 10 years.
