UN Calls for New
One-World Currency
U.N. leaders are calling for a new international monetary system to replace the U.S. dollar as the world's reserve currency. The UN leadership believes that the dollar’s role in international trade should be reduced by establishing a new currency to protect emerging markets from the “confidence game” of financial speculation, the United Nations said.
UN countries should agree on the creation of a global reserve bank to issue the currency and to monitor the national exchange rates of its members, the Geneva-based UN Conference on Trade and Development said today in a report.
China, India, Brazil and Russia this year called for a replacement to the dollar as the main reserve currency after the financial crisis sparked by the collapse of the U.S. mortgage market led to the worst global recession since World War II. China, the world’s largest holder of dollar reserves, said a supranational currency such as the International Monetary Fund’s special drawing rights, or SDRs, may add stability.
“There’s a much better chance of achieving a stable pattern of exchange rates in a multilaterally-agreed framework for exchange-rate management,” Heiner Flassbeck, co-author of the report and a UNCTAD director, said in an interview from Geneva. “An initiative equivalent to Bretton Woods or the European Monetary System is needed.” For more on this developing story, LINK HERE.

Obama To Preside At UN Security Council
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice told reporters on Wednesday that the highlight of the U.S. presidency will be a summit-level Security Council meeting on nuclear non-proliferation. It is scheduled to be held on September 24 and will be chaired by President Obama - the first time a U.S. president has led a Security Council meeting.
Ambassador Rice said she expects a large number, if not all, of the 15 Security Council members to be represented at the head of state or government level. This would include Libyan leader, Moammar Gadhafi whose country holds a non-permanent seat on the council.
In addition to the non-proliferation summit, Rice confirmed that President Obama will address the opening session of a climate change summit to be convened by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on September 22.
In keeping with U.N. tradition, the U.S. president will address the General Assembly on the first day of its annual debate, on September 23. All in all, President Obama is expected to spend three days at the United Nations. For more details, LINK HERE.

Judge Rules Against FOX News
In Favor of Fed Reserve Secrets
A federal judge has ruled against a request by the FOX News Network seeking all relevant documents pertaining to the Federal Reserve's bailout of numerous investment firms and banks.
The FOX News lawsuit stems from a Freedom of Information Act request on the Federal Reserve's paperwork on bailout loans made during last year's banking crisis. The Federal Reserve, which is technically a private corporation and not a part of the Federal Government refused the request saying that the FOIA regulations are not applicable to the Federal Reserve. FOX News then took the issue to Federal court.
FOX News will reportedly appeal the ruling. A similar lawsuit filed by Bloomberg News Service won a Federal Judge's decree mandating the central bank turn over all relevant documents related to the bailouts, but the Federal Reserve argued that doing so could result in a collapse of the world's entire banking system and plunge not only America but the entire world into a massive depression. With that judge's ruling, the Federal Reserve has requested to right to appeal the decision and has until the end of the month to file such appeal papers in court.
