Solar Storm Cycle Heating Up

 

(A-O Newswire) -- The sun's 11 year solar cycle is starting to turn active again, according to NASA solar scientists. The activity began to pick up during June and by mid-month NASA scientists indicated the solar cycle was about to begin its typical "active" phase after its traditional dormant period.

This means that the new solar storm cycle will begin to increase in activity for the next three years or so, peaking around the year 2012. Some scientists believe this new cycle could be the most violent for the sun in perhaps several hundred years or more, based upon the actions of the last solar cycle.

The peak phase of the last cycle saw the most dangerous explosions ever recorded by human observation. So severe were the eruptions that new measuring scales had to be devised as the x-ray intensity went off the charts.

Solar storms have the ability to wreck satellites and disrupt not only communications systems but devastate electrical power grids on Earth, triggering massive blackouts. One storm struck the northeastern part of North America in 1988 which triggered significant power outages to a large portion of Canada and affected the northeastern United States power systems. Fortunately that incident was just a glancing blow.

Scientists are concerned that a potential 'direct hit' on earth could severely disrupt modern life on the planet by destroying communications satellites and triggering shutdowns of power grids on entire continents or hemispheres.
