Tensions Rise Amid New Challenges

North Korea seems determined to trigger some sort of military action with the United States.
Last week, North Korea began preparing for the launch of a long-range missile. US and Japanese intelligence sources have reason to believe that the missile will be aimed towards Hawaii. A Japanese news agency suggested that the missile would be launched around July 4, much like a similar event on July 4, 2006.
Additionally, new intelligence suggests North Korea is preparing for another nuclear test.
As if that were not enough, the Pentagon reports that the US Navy destroyer, USS John McCain is shadowing a North Korean freighter believed to be carrying missile parts and some time of nuclear material. The ship has been plying Chinese waters and speculation is that the ship is headed for Iran.
IF the ship does contain missile parts or nuclear materials it would be a violation of the new UN sanctions imposed on North Korea. Under the sanction, the US Navy is authorized to interdict the ship and direct it to a nearby port for an in-port inspection.
North Korea was warned that any attempt at interdiction would be considered an act of war and would act accordingly with military action.
Washington sources believe that the US will wait until the ship is out of Chinese waters before attempting to make any kind of interdiction.
