USA Strikes Inside Syria

(A-O Newswire) - US Special Forces conducted a cross-border strike against the foreign-based terrorist network's smuggling system that runs through Syria. The US strike involved US helicopters in a cross-border raid that reportedly killed 8 people.
The Syrian government condemned the US military action and called it a "serious aggression." A Syrian government statement indicated the raid occcured near the town of Abu Kamal, five miles inside the Syrian border. Syria claimed that some of the casualties were civilians including four children. Syria claimed that 4 US helicopters followed the Euphrates River at low altitude attacking a civilian building near sundown and fired on workers inside the biulding. One Syrian eyewitness stated that some of the helicopters landed with US troops exiting the choppers and firing on the building. The strike area is home to several farms and brick factories.
A US military official stated anonymously to Associated Press that, "We are taking matters into our own hands." Syria has done very little to stop the movement of foreign based guerilla fighters moving back and forth from Iraq to Syria for safe haven. It appears that the Bush Administration has lost patience with Syria's lack of follow-through in stopping the insurgency flow back into Syria, especially since Syria now has 4 Army divisions along the Lebanese border. We'll have further analysis of this development in the next issue of the A-O Intelligence Digest on the A-O Insider Report website.
Sunday’s operation was an extension of the US-Iraqi offensive to purge the northern Iraqi town of Mosul and their northern Syria havens of al Qaeda elements, the last two strong bastions the jihadists still retain in the region.
Al Qaeda fighters captured by the US military in and around Mosul in recent days revealed that the flow of arms, fighters, cash and explosives from Syria to Iraq continues unabated. This, notwithstanding Syrian foreign minister Walid Muallem’s assurance to US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice that Damascus had halted this traffic when they met in New York in September. The US military struck after catching Syria back at the game in breach of its pledge.
