The A-O Intelligence Digest has reported in the past, intelligence reports out of Russia indicated that the Russian government had agreed in principle to produce and sell export versions of its new S-300 anti-aircraft and anti-missile defense systems to Iran.
Iran had solicited Moscow to sell the S-300 system to Iran to help protect Irans nuclear "research" facilities from pre-emptive air strikes by either Israel or the United States. The Kremlin finally admitted publicly today that Russia had agreed to sell the S-300 systems to Iran
A Russian spokesman said that it was only natural to agree to the sale stating: "in the current situation, when the US and the West in general ar stubbornly gearing towards a confrontation with Russia."
The latest edition of the A-O Intelligence Digest published just 24 hours before the Russian announcment had reported that Russia's new geo-political defense strategy is to form alliances with Islamic nations and Venezuela to counter what it sees as a growing threat to its security from America and Europe.
To underscore that analysis, 24 hours later, Russia announced not only the weapons sales to Iran but also revealed that it is negotiating with Venezuela to sell anti-aircraft systems, armored personnel carriers and Russia's new SU-35 fighter jets when they come into production in 2010. This latest revelation comes on the heels of a visit by 2 Russian nuclear bombers to Venezuela and an announcment that a Russian naval flotilla will join Venezuela in naval exercises in the Caribbean in early November.
Russia's decision to sell arms to Iran and Venezuela comes in response to U.S. plans to install a missile defense shield in Poland, something the Russians strenuously object to and perceive as a threat to Russian security.
