Will Feature Photos of All Fragments
-
-
For the first time ever, Israeli authorities will post online images of thousands of fragile fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Images will even feature infrared imaging to reveal previously illegible portions of the scroll parchments.
The online project will involve documentation of all of the thousands of Dead Sea Scroll fragments, which contain the oldest Hebrew writings of the Old Testament that have been discovered to the present time. The Scroll fragments are remnants of more than 900 ancient manuscripts found in caves along the Dead Sea in Israel and Jordan.
A special unique aspect of the project will be the use of infrared and color imaging which scientists believe will make sections of the scrolls readable for the first time. Numerous sections of the Scroll fragments have been blackened or erased by material degration of the ink and the brittle parchment. There is believed to be more writing, missing letters, words, even whole phrases or sentences that will become readable using the latest scientific methods to digitally enhance photographic images taken of the Scrolls.
