(A-O Newswire) -- Syrian President Bashar Assad was hastily invited to Moscow for a summit meeting shortly after Poland announced an agreement to permit a US anti-missile defense shield to be installed in that nation.
Assad flew to Moscow on Wednesday, August 20 for a 2 day summit amidst reports that the primary topic of the summit would be mutual defense agreements and possibly a defense treaty. Upon arrival in Moscow, Assad indicated he would approve of Russian naval forces coming to Syria. Shortly thereafter, Russian media reported that Russia's only aircraft carrier and an accompanying cruiser would soon depart for a mission to Syria.
Rumors are also flying around the Middle East that Russia will be dispatching Russian nuclear missiles to Syria, the Mediterranean and Baltic regions in what appears to be the start of a new "Cold War." Other rumors indicate new defense arrangements are being hammered out on day 2 of the summit conference. There is wide speculation that Russia will propose the establishment of a defense treaty with Syria. The A-O Report is closely monitoring the situation and will be posting additional information here as it becomes available.

Russian President Calls Israel's Prime Minister
-
Russian President Medvedev called Israeli Prime Minister Olmert for a phone conference on Wednesday evening to discuss regional issues before meeting with Syrian President Assad on Thursday. Few details of the phone call have been released, but more than likely the two leaders discussed possible weapons purchases by Syria and potential Russian defense agreements with Syria. Last week Russia angrily blamed Israel for helping to instigate the Georgian crisis by sending Israeli military trainers to Georgia before the crisis developed into a war.
