Over Missile Shield In Poland

 (A-O Newswire) -- The Russian Foreign Ministry says that any further US development of the a US missile shield in Poland will trigger more than a mere diplomatic response, hinting the possibility of war with the U.S.

 The Russian statement claimed that the installation of a missile shield in Poland is an attempt by the US to weaken Russia, something the Russian government will not tolerate nor permit without a fight.

 Last Friday, Poland announced it would agree to allow the United States to deploy an anti-missile defense shield to destroy any incoming missiles headed for Europe. The U.S. and NATO claim the shield is necessary to protect Europe from rogue nations or failed nation-states which might launch missiles into Europe.

 Western strategists are most concerned that Iran might do launch a missile strike at Europe after Iran demonstrated its ICBM missile capabilities on Saturday with a missile launch of a satellite. The Russian response today ignores the US claim of a new Iranian missile threat

 In a related development, US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice signed the agreement for installing the missile shield with her Polish counterpart. It was the signing of that agreement which precipitated the Russian Foreign Ministry's angry warning. Rice dismissed the Russian response saing that such statements "border on the bizzare, frankly. When you threaten Poland, you perhaps forget that it is not 1988, its 2008 and the United States has a ... firm treaty guarantee to defend Poland's as if it was the territory of the United States. So its probably not wise to throw these threats around."

 Rice went on to add, "the Russians are losing their credibility."

 Today's Russian Foreign Ministry statement was not the first threat to emanate from Russian leadership in regard to installing a missile shield in Poland. Over the weekend, Russian General Anatoly Nogovitsyn warned that Poland risked not only a conventional Russian ground attack but even perhaps a nuclear strike by Russia should Poland permit the anti-missile deployment.
