(A-O Newswire) -- Israel's Health Ministry is warning Israeli hospitals to be ready for mass casualties as an earthquake in a magnitude of  6.0+ is expected. The quake epicenter is expected to be somewhere in Lebanon but with such a magnitude of size, Israeli officials expect significant damage and casualties in northern Israel.

The quake warning is based upon abnormal seismic activity noted in southern Lebanon since February. Experts believe that abnormal activity events are a prelude to a large magnitude earthquake. The area has experienced 500 minor quakes in a three month period. In May the temblors grew in intensity suggesting a harbinger of a major quake yet to come.

Experts also note that more than 800 minor quakes have been registered ranging in magnitude from 2.3 to 5.1 on the Richter scale in the southern Lebanon region including the cities of Tyre and Nabatiyeh.

Authorities recall a similar quake in 1956 killed 136 people and destroyed 6,000 homes. In 1927 another quake struck the region killing 300 in Jerusalem and nearby Jericho. It is believed that a similar quake on a 7.0 magnitude scale with an epicenter in the Hula Velley in northern Israel devastated the town of Safed, killing some 4,000 in 1837.

studies done by the Israeli Geophysics Institute, which show that the change in pace of the earthquake activities in South Lebanon raises the probability of occurrences of more strong earthquakes in the north.

The estimates suggest an earthquake of a magnitude of six on the Richter Scale may impact upon towns in Israel from Haifa northwards, and is likely to cause destruction of buildings and foundations. For more on this story, LINK HERE.
