Iran War Resolution!

(AO Newswire) -- The United States Congress is moving to pass a resolution demanding that the President "do something" immediately to halt Iran's nuclear program and its uranium enrichment program.
House of Representatives Resolution #362 is mirrored by a similar resolution #580 in the Senate, which was introduced by Indiana Senator Evan Bayh on June 2. The Senate bill already has 19 other co-sponsors or 20% of the Senate. In the House, 170 Congressmen or 40% of the entire House are co-sponsors. Both bills are being given bi-partisan support from both Democrats and Republicans. It appears both wings of Congress will overwhelmingly pass this legislation next week after Congress returns from the 4th of July recess.
The Resolution's key section states a demand to the President saying:
"demands that the president initiate an international effort to immediately and dramatically increase the economic, political, and diplomatic pressure on Iran to verifiably suspend its nuclear enrichment activities by, inter alia, prohibiting the export to Iran of all refined petroleum products; imposing stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains, and cargo entering or departing Iran; and prohibiting the international movement of all Iranian officials not involved in negotiating the suspension of Iran’s nuclear program.”
“Imposing stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains, and cargo entering or departing Iran”
This means that the President should initiate a naval blockade of Iran. It should be noted that such an act would be illegal under international law and under the UN Charter. A unilateral naval blockade without UN sanction is an act of war. Therefore, some critics (antiwar) are naming this bill as an Iran War Resolution.
This action by Congress is essentially an act of war or an illegal act of war. IF the President were to enact a naval blockade of Iran, the Iranians would most likely take it as an act of war and would take military action if a blockade were to be enforced..
Isn't it amazing how some events can seemingly turn on a dime from out of nowhere? For a link to a copy of the House Resolution 362 - LINK HERE directly to the Library of Congress webpage for the bill itself. For the Senate Resolution 570, LINK HERE.
