Lebanese Crisis Goes Critical

The Lebanese political crisis has now shifted into a critical situation with Hezbollah, Syria and Iran threatening to overthrow the Lebanese government as part of an overall effort to prevent a UN tribunal from arresting key leaders within Hezbollah and the arrest of Syria's President Hafez Assad on charges of conspiracy in the 2005 assassination of the late Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Once the UN threat is eliminated, our intelligence reports indicate that Iran's President is believed to have have lined up enough support from within the regime to either declare war on Israel or launch a sneak attack against Israel (and perhaps the USA) in retaliation for they believe to be an Israeli cyber-attach on Iran's computer infrastructure.

The time frame we're looking at appears to expect major development to unfold after Iranian President Ahmadinejad makes a 2-day state visit to Lebanon on October 13 and 14. Speculation among regional analysts concludes a strong likelihood for an outbreak of war within a 30 day window after his departure from Beirut for Tehran.

Israel Not Showing Its Hand

As the turmoil in Lebanon develops, Israel's Prime Minister has not tipped his hand as to how Israel will respond to a coup or civil war in Lebanon. Netanyahu has however thrown out a test to Syria to determine whether Syria is seriuos about a peace settlement with Israel.

Recently, Netanyahu forwarded a peace proposal to Syria that was delivered by President Obama's Middle East envoy, George Mitchell. Netanyahu's proposal called for a 2-stage Israeli withdrawal from the Golan Heights in exchange for peace and Syria's cutting of ties and defense agreemetns with Iran. Syria's President Assad responded by flying to Tehran and then announcing a strengthening of ties with Iran. Now Israel knows Syria has no interest in a peaceful resolution with Israel.

The Syrian response was pretty much expected, but Netanyahu can now persuasively state to the Obama Administration that peace efforts with the Syrians and Palestinians are a waste of time until another war convinces them to sue for peace.

Palestinians Expecting War

The Palestinians have splintered into various factions in the past decade with two primary groups being Hamas and the PLO/Fatah. Both sides have begun unity talks and are reportedly ready to unite. Why? In expectation of war between Israel and Iran with the Palestinians caught in the middle and facing potential liquidation by Israel.

The new A-O Intelligence Digest features further analsysis of this situation and how it all fits together with other regional developments and what to expect in the near future. At the moment final unity has yet to be achieved but both sides are now working together on security plans for The Haj pilgrammage. For more on the pilgrammage cooperation, LINK HERE.
