Editor's Note: News out of the Middle East has been rather slow this past week as the region mulls over the U.S. mid-term elections and awaits the outcome of a UN Tribunal investigation into the 2005 Lebanese assassination of Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. The Tribunal is expected to announce indictments sometime in the near future which is likely to include leading members of Hezbollah. Hezbollah has warned against any such move, intimating that such a development would lead to an overthrow of the Lebanese government and or a civil war. Such a move would likely prompt Israel to intervene to prevent a Hezbollah take-over. Consequently, the Middle East is on 'pins and needles' with tensions remaining high awaiting further developments. Perhaps the hottest news is that of a speech given by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham suggesting that military action against Iran may be required and if so, it should be a major military action designed to eliminate Iran's military threat to the world.

US Senator Calls For War on Iran

South Carolina's senior senator, Lindsey Graham addressed the Halifax International Security Forum, Saturday evening and called for a decisive blow to Iran's military capabilities while the opportunity to do so remains viable.

Senator Graham, who serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Homeland Security Committee told the forum that the U.S. should "sink their navy, destroy their air force and deliver a decisive blow to the Revolutionary Guard." Senator Graham went on to state:

"My view of military force would be not to just neutralize their nuclear program, which are probably dispersed and hardened, but to sink their navy, destroy their air force and deliver a decisive blow to the Revolutionary Guard. In other words, neuter that regime."

Senator Graham went on to add that such a move would perhaps enable the Iranian people to take back their government. He did note that he believed there was still time for economic sanctions to work but noted that the current sanctions already in place are not "crippling."
