Israel to Hold Elections

Kadima party chair Tzipi Livni wants new elections held as soon as possible, and to that end, has instructed her party's faction chairman, MK Yoel Hasson, to submit legislation on Monday for the immediate dissolution of the Knesset and for new elections in 90 days - that is, on January 27, 2009. Earlier on Sunday, Livni officially informed President Shimon Peres of her decision to go to elections, declaring: "I refuse to pawn Israel's future for the prime minister's seat."
Her efforts to form a government without going to elections collapsed over the weekend after Shas, the Pensioners Party and United Torah Judaism all refused her final offer. Livni, who called these parties' demands "extortionate," told Peres that she had done everything she could to try to cobble together a parliamentary coalition, and noted that other parties said they also prefer elections.
The Ultra-Orthodox Shas Party refused to join the coalition out of concern that a new Livni government would negotiate a peace leaving Jerusalem divided between Arabs and Jews, something the Shas Party totally opposed and refused to compromise. In that regard, Livni never really had a chance to form a new government because without the support of the Shas party, Livni simply couldn't put together enough Knesset members to form a new government. It seems, most political parties felt they could gain more from new elections.
In another bid to bolster her position, MK Tzachi Hanegbi, who is close to both Livni and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, plans to urge Olmert to declare himself temporarily incapacitated and to allow Livni to replace him for at least part of the time remaining until the election, to enable her to enter the race from the Prime Minister's Office.

Early Israeli Poll:
Livni Leads Netanyahu
Just 24 hours after the announcement that new elections will be held in Israel early next year, a new opinion poll shows that Tzipi Livni's Kadima Party leads the Likud Party in the number of seats that would be won. The new opinion poll shows Kadima winning 29 seats in the Knesset while the conservative Likud Party would garner 26 seats. Labor The Labor Party would net only 11 seats - a loss of 8 from its current level of 19 parliament seats.
In a less scientific poll, Kadima wins 31 while Likud grabs 29. Keep in mind there are 120 seats in Israel's parliament called the Knesset. To gain control, a Party or group of parties must have a majority of the 120 seats to establish a new government and select a Prime Minister. For more details, LINK HERE.

Israeli Election Kills Peace Process
President Bush's dreams for a legacy of peace were officially dashed when Israel's Foreign Minister, Tzipi Livni announced that she could not form a new coalition government. With Israel moving to new elections, none of Israel's Arab neighbors wish to continue negotiations for peace, preferring to await the results of new elections. More details on this story, LINK HERE.

Iran's Prez Stressed Out
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is reportedly exhausted and stressed out due to "heavy workload" according to a close associate who tipped off the Iranian state news agency. The revelation comes amid speculation as to whether the fiery leader will seek re-election next year amid strong criticism from political opponents.
The source of the report is Mohammad Ismail Kowsari, a member of the Iranian Parliament who is an ally of the president. Kowsari told the IRNA that Ahmadinejad was feeling under the weather because of the strain of being president but that, "the president will eventually get well and continue his job."
The reason for disclosure of Ahamdinejad's exhaustion was to counter reports circulating in Iran suggesting that the Iranian president might suffering from a serious illness. Such speculation has been fueled by the president's cancellations of scheduled appearances.
