IDF Warplanes Scrambled

Israeli fighter jets were scrambled to the Lebanese-Syrian border on Yom Kippur after a suspicious aircraft was detected approaching Israeli air space.

The unidentified airplane turned around and flew away from IDF interceptors. IDF ground troops conducted a sweep along the border to see if any thing had been dropped into the border area. Israel officials were concerned that the plane might have dropped Hezbollah commandoes into the region to conduct a cross-border attack during Yom Kippur.

Syria Masses Troops

Israel On High Alert

Syria has deployed additional troops on the Lebanese border with Syria. Syria began massing troops on Lebanon's northern border several weeks ago, but on Tuesday, Syrian tank units moved into the southern border region along Lebanon's Beqaa Valley.

Debka.com reports that Israel's Defense Minister, Ehud Barak responded to the troop movements by making a quick trip to Israel's border with Syria and Lebanon to check on the readiness of IDF troops along the border and placed the IDF on High Alert. Israeli forces are on guard for the potential threat of an invasion of Israel by either Syria or Hezbollah as well as the potential for a spectucular terror strike.

It should be noted that the developments come on the eve of the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur and the 35th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War of 1973 when Syria and Egypt launched a suprise attack against Israel during the high holy day of Yom Kippur.

Both Israeli and US military strategists are now concerned that Syria might take advantage of Israel's holiday when the nation virtually shuts down for 25 hours beginning at sundown on Wednesday, October 8 and continues until sundown on Thursday evening, October 9.

In addition to a heightened alert along Israel's northern border with Lebanon and Syria, Israeli defense forces sealed off the West Bank and Israel's border terminals with Jordan, and Egypt to prevent any possible terror strikes that might originate outside of Israel's borders.

The United States has issued a warning to Syria to leave Lebanon alone and to not strike Israel. For more details from AP Newswire - LINK HERE. For Debka coverage, LINK HERE.
